Steps 3 & 5

Cold Water
Therapy

Length of Session: 1-3 Minutes, Twice per Visit

How It Works

Take the plunge in our cold water hydrotherapy tubs to build mental resilience and RESET your nervous system.

A cold plunge is a staple of The RESET Method because of its effects on muscle recovery, mental resilience, stress, sleep health, and more. Our wellness studios feature custom-built stainless steel cold water tubs that stay around 42 degrees or below for exceptional cold exposure. Submerging to your neck will RESET your nervous system to get you out of the “fight or flight” sympathetic state, and activate the parasympathetic or relaxed state. We recommend trying two cold water sessions sandwiched around time in the hot tub for the best results.

Benefits

Embrace the cold during hydrotherapy sessions to experience less pain, a clearer mind, and a better mood.

Immersing yourself in cold water up to the neck resets your body’s sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems through an initial shock followed by a state of calm. The plunge into cold temperatures forces you to focus on breath control and tune in with your body as you overcome the fight or flight response. After some time in the water, your relaxation and recovery control center will take over to help you regain your autonomic balance.

Resetting of nervous system

The shock of plunging into an ice bath overloads your nervous system, which balances out after prolonged exposure. This effect is like hitting the RESET button on your nerves and leaves you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and alert.

Cold water exposure triggers the body’s response to reduce stress hormone levels. This reduction in cortisol slows down your stress response to help you achieve a calmer state. Ice baths also encourage controlled breathing as an added stress reliever.

Engaging your body’s sympathetic nervous system via cold water hydrotherapy triggers the flight or fight response, increasing your mental alertness and focus. Regular cold water exposure improves cognitive function because of this process.

Your body experiences a rush of mood-boosting endorphins during cold water exposure. Many people feel euphoric after an ice bath due to lower cortisol levels, more endorphins, and heightened mental clarity.

Immersing yourself in cold water causes your veins to constrict, which decreases blood flow to limit muscle swelling post-exercise. After you leave the cold bath, your blood vessels dilate to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscle tissue, enhancing recovery.

Vasoconstriction caused by cold plunges reduces blood flow to inflamed areas and prevents further swelling. When you exit the water, your veins dilate to remove metabolic waste that contributes to chronic inflammation.

Alternating between cold water and warm air causes your veins to constrict and dilate, which creates a pumping effect that enhances circulation. Better circulation improves blood flow, accelerates waste removal, and boosts nutrient delivery to your body.

Ice baths are a mind-over-matter modality that expose you to controlled stress and teach your body to increase stress tolerance. Over time, regular cold water therapy helps you build mental and physical resilience that carries into everyday life.

Cold plunges relieve your pain with instant and long-term effects. Initial relief stems from the numbing of inflamed nerve endings, while long-term relief comes from the removal of metabolic waste, increased blood flow, and higher endorphin levels.

Reduced inflammation, improved metabolic waste disposal, and better circulation from cold water exposure contribute to better immune system function. Ice baths also boost your white blood cell production to help you fight off disease or infection.
